Since I am having issues (snap apps installed not shown in the menu) with Sparky Linux 6.2 Xfce, I decided to test out other Q4OS and Linux Mint Linux distributions to see how well they worked and any issues that I might encounter. I was hoping to get a trouble-free Linux distro to install on my old Thinkpad X200. As usual, I would be testing these two using VirtualBox.
Virtual Machines specs:
- 1 CPU
- 2GB RAM
- 30 GB hard disk
Linux Mint 20.3 Xfce
I am more confident with Linux Mint since it has better support for this Linux distro. I have been using Linux Mint 20.3 on my Asus X556UB and I am satisfied with Linux Mint 20.3 MATE. I just prefer less RAM for my other laptops so I chose Xfce instead of MATE.
I do not encounter any issues so far from installation to updating the system. After trying snap installation and update theme will I conclude the test with htop result.
For autologon, there is a GUI in the system menu under "login Window". It is under the User tab.
The snap installation does not have a launcher in the menu as well. It seems to be a bug or some path issues based on what I can find on the Internet.
Linux Mint 20.3 Xfce desktop with Adwaita-dark theme
Linux Mint 20.3 Xfce running htop
As for RAM usage, it only took about 480MB of RAM when running htop.
Q4OS 4.7 with minimum profile setting and select additional Xfce DE
I am unsure if it was my fault or the VM as I encounter loading VM issues with Q4OS. It takes too long to load after "loading initial ramdisk ..." message. I am trying to install Xfce without setting autologin. The first time with Xfce and autologin seems to hang when loading the VM.
Note: I have noticed that whenever I tried to remove trinity applications, such as Konqueror, it would totally remove trinity DE but also install KDE Plasma DE. I am not sure why but it will be a pain if you want to have a clean operating system, that is not possible.
The Xfce DE gives you a macOS feel but surprisingly, you do not see your network manager at the taskbar or panel. However, the network connectivity is not affected. Even if you install gnome-network-manager, nothing changed.
Q4OS with Xfce DE
Q4OS with Xfce DE running htop
As for RAM usage, it only took about 290MB of RAM when running htop. For those who are interested in using Xfce DE with limited RAM, this combination can be a good consideration as it is the least RAM usage for Xfce.
snap install whatsapp-4linux
The snap installation is complete but there is no launcher for whatsapp-4linux. This is the same issue that I encounter in Sparky Linux. It seems to be an issue with the path and the desktop link not being in the correct path. Found a few websites but need to test out the actual solution to find out which works.
