China SSD Speed Test Review

Recently, I have decided to purchase China brand (Zheino and Goldenfir) SSDs to upgrade the mechanical harddisks that I have at home.

I was experiencing slowness on my Lenovo U41 laptop and suspected that it is caused by a failing harddisk. I did replace with another harddisk but the problem still exists. At that time I managed to find a Zheino brand 512GB SSD on offer (SGD$25.48 @Lazada) and quickly purchased it. Initially I was looking at KingSpecs but the price rose from $18+ to $29+ so I decided not to get it. I have reviewed Zheino previously when I was looking for SSD but did not make any purchase as I have quite a few spare harddisk to use. Since the price is less than SGD$30 for 512GB SSD, it was worthy to purchase and test it out myself.

After it arrived, I installed the Zheino 512GB SSD into my Lenovo U41 laptop and reinstalled Linux Lite(My favorite Linux distribution right now). After the installation, I noticed that copying files from a external harddisk to my laptop was pretty slow. Likely the Linux drivers are not updated and cause the slowness. After the laptop is fully updated, the copying speed seem to have improved.

So far, I do not have any complains with Zheino SSD. Its read/write speed is similar to what it has advertised and is faster than my previous mechanical harddisk. My laptop boot up time improves a lot and file transfer or loading of applications seems snappy as well. This SSD is a worthy investment.

Later on, I noticed that there is a big discount for Goldenfir 360GB SSD on Shopee. It cost SGD$13.63 and I purchased it at SGD$11.38 (after free @collection point and use of Shopee coins). I decided to put it into my Lenovo Thinkpad X201i laptop which does not have a SSD. It is actually faster compared to my Lenovo Thinkpad X200 and comes with a working battery but the wireless NIC is no longer working so I have to use a TPLINK USB wireless adaptor to access WiFi. This caused me to lose a USB port and also it already has a spoiled USB port as well. I still prefer CPU speed and working battery compared to other flaws.

I initially wanted to do a full format but after it takes too long, I decide against it. Then I replace it into my Thinkpad X201i. However, I noticed that the Goldenfir casing seems to be slightly larger at the bottom as I could not screw in all the screws to the harddisk casing. I also could not put the 2 rubber holder to secure the SSD in the harddisk slot on the laptop. I have to use cardboard to hold the SSD in place.

When I try to install Linux Lite using USB drive, I was unable to load the Linux Lite for the installation. It is only when I use compatibility mode then it works. After installing Linux Lite, there is no more issue on the SSD.

After I installed all my favorite apps and updated the laptop, I decided to run KDiskMark on the laptop and below is the results for the Goldenfir 360GB SSD.

Speed test on Lenovo Thinkpad X201i
As you can see, the results compared to the advertised read/write, 532MB/s (Read) and 484MB/s(Write) differs a lot from what I got. Maybe it is due to the SATA version on the laptop(2010 model) as I suspect it is not SATA version 3. Seems to be running SATA 2@300MB/s(3Gb/s).

Data Transfer Rate For SATA
SATA (SATA-I) = 150 MB/s (1.5 Gb/s)
SATA-II or SATA 2 =  300 MB/s (3.0 Gb/s)
SATA 3 = 600 MB/s (6.0 Gb/s)

MX Linux Fluxbox Review - For Low-End Laptops

MX Linux logo from https://linuxiac.com/mx-linux/      Recently I have successfully installed MX Linux Fluxbox on my Acer Aspire One 725 (AO725) netbook. I initially wanted to install Bodhi Linux onto my AO725 netbook, but failed. Finally I tried MX Linux Fluxbox, after trying Anti-X linux and some other ultra-lightweight Linux. MX Linux Fluxbox is suppose to be a lightweight Linux for low-powered laptops such as netbooks or very old laptops. Upon bootup, it only takes 337MB of RAM (438MB for Thinkpad X200) before you load any apps. With 4GB RAM, it is still a lot of RAM for for most apps, like the browser but the CPU utilization is close to 100% after running a Chromium broswer and DeadBeef music player. Things likely be slow... after this point from my observation but I have not tried to do anything more than those common things that I usually need to do.      Since I managed to install MX Linux Fluxbox, I initially did not bother to use the A...

Linux-DesktopEnv: RAM Usage Comparison For Sparky Linux LxQT and Xfce and Q40S MATE Desktop Environment

Today I did a test on RAM usage for the following desktop environments (DE) using VirtualBox to determine their RAM usage: MATE DE with Q4OS 4.7 Sparky Linux 6.2 LXQt Sparky Linux 6.2 Xfce      The main reason is for me to decide which desktop environment I want to use for my Lenovo Thinkpad X200. I have tried other desktop environments: Enlightenment with SparkyLinux MininumGUI  Trinity with Q4OS Bodhi Linux with a customized Enlightenment DE      The main issue with Enlightenment with SparkyLinux is that it does not work well with autologin. Sometimes it gets kicked out and you have to login again. I suspect is the windows manager issue but I cannot find the solution for this. Trinity has an issue with using jpg wallpaper so it is a turn-off as I don't want default wallpapers. The customized Enlightenment desktop in Bodhi Linux has limited themes but is still acceptable but I want to look for the best for my Thinkpad X200.     ...
